Pig Butchering Scam: How It Works and Legal Options

The "pig butchering" method (in Turkish, domuz bağı) is an investment fraud based on building a relationship with the victim over weeks or even months to create trust, and then taking a large amount of money. The name comes from the image of an animal being "fattened up" before slaughter: the victim is first kept occupied with gains, then loses all their savings.
🪤 How Does the Method Work?
The process most often begins with a social media message, a dating app or a "wrong number" message. The fraudster builds a friendly relationship over a long period; then, speaking of "a profitable investment opportunity", steers the victim to a fake platform.
At first the platform shows fake profits and may even allow a small withdrawal. Once trust is complete, the victim deposits more and more; when they want to withdraw money, new payments are demanded under pretexts such as "tax", "commission" and "account verification", and the account suddenly becomes inaccessible.
🚩 Distinguishing Signs
- A relationship with someone you do not know turning towards investment
- A "special" platform that only that person recommends and that cannot be found elsewhere
- Profits shown on screen having no real counterpart
- Constant new payment demands at the withdrawal stage
⚖️ Legal Nature
Because the pig butchering method means deceiving a person through fraudulent conduct and causing them loss, it falls under qualified fraud under Article 158 of the Turkish Penal Code. The fact that the act is committed through information systems and often in an organised way forms the aggravating aspects of the offence.
Important: In this kind of fraud, the money is usually transferred to crypto wallets. Because movements on the blockchain can be traced, early action is valuable for following the money.
💸 Recovery and Refund
For crypto transfers, blockchain tracing, suspension and seizure measures against accounts at licensed exchanges, precautionary injunctions and the mechanisms for returning money to the victim in the criminal case are assessed together. Because the chance that the money is still at a traceable point decreases over time, the process requires speed.
