Turkish Citizenship by Marriage: Conditions and Process

Foreigners who marry a Turkish citizen can apply for Turkish citizenship under certain conditions. However, marriage alone does not grant citizenship automatically. This article covers citizenship by marriage for information purposes.
💍 Basic Conditions
For citizenship by marriage, conditions such as having been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years and the marital union actually continuing are required. Living within the family union and not behaving in ways contrary to the marriage are also assessed. This route is among the most frequently used of the ways of acquiring citizenship. The conditions are required as a whole.
Note: What is decisive in citizenship by marriage is that the marriage has the purpose of a genuine family union.
🔍 Review for Sham Marriage
In applications, it is examined whether the marriage has the purpose of a genuine family union. In sham (fictitious) marriages entered into solely to obtain citizenship, the application is rejected. In addition, if such a situation is established later, the status already acquired may also be called into question. The genuineness of the marriage is essential.
⚖️ Process and Outcome
If the conditions are met, the application is assessed and decided by the relevant authorities. The absence of any obstacle in terms of national security and public order is required. If the application is rejected, the administrative court route may be considered. The process is also linked to the spouse's residence status. Each application is handled under its own conditions.
