Residence Permit in Türkiye: What It Is and the Main Types

For a foreigner to stay lawfully in Türkiye, a residence permit is, as a rule, required. Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection provides for various types of residence permit depending on the purpose. This article covers the residence permit and its types for information purposes.
🪪 What Is a Residence Permit?
A residence permit is the official document that allows a foreigner to stay lawfully in Türkiye for a certain period and purpose. Foreigners who will stay beyond the period of their visa or visa exemption must, as a rule, obtain a residence permit. Applications are made electronically (e-ikamet) through the Presidency of Migration Management. The type of permit is determined by the purpose of stay.
Note: The type of residence permit is determined by the foreigner’s purpose of stay in Türkiye.
📋 Main Types of Residence Permit
The law regulates types such as short-term, family, student, long-term and humanitarian residence permits. A short-term permit is issued for purposes such as tourism, setting up a business or owning real estate; a family permit for the spouse and children of a Turkish citizen or of a foreigner holding a permit; and a student permit for education. For those who stay lawfully for a long time, the route to citizenship may also come into question.
⚖️ Extension, Refusal and Appeal
Residence permits are issued for a fixed term, and an extension application can be made before the term expires. If an application is refused, the decision is notified with its reasons, and the administrative court route is open against it. Cancellation or refusal of a permit may affect a person’s stay in the country and, where relevant, the deportation process. Keeping track of time limits is important.
