Ways to Acquire Turkish Citizenship: Marriage, Investment

Turkish citizenship can be acquired in different ways. Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901 regulates various routes such as birth, marriage, investment and the general application. This article covers the ways of acquiring citizenship for information purposes.
🌱 Birth and the General Route
Citizenship can be acquired by birth (on the basis of descent or place of birth) or by a later application. For an application by the general route, conditions such as uninterrupted lawful residence for the period set out in the law, good morals and general health are required. The application requires the relevant conditions to be assessed as a whole.
Note: No route is automatic, including the marriage and investment routes; the conditions must be met.
💍 Marriage and Investment Route
Marriage to a Turkish citizen does not by itself grant citizenship automatically; conditions such as having been married for at least three years and the marital union actually continuing are required. Citizenship by the exceptional (investment) route, on the other hand, may come into question by Presidential decision, under conditions such as the purchase of real estate of a certain amount, a fixed capital investment, employment or a bank deposit. The amounts and conditions are determined by legislation.
⚖️ Assessment and Outcome
In citizenship applications, the absence of any obstacle in terms of national security and public order is essential. If the application is rejected, the administrative court route may be considered. The citizenship process is also closely linked to work and residence history. Each application is handled under its own conditions.
