Metamax Recovery Scam: Fake Refund Calls Misusing a Name

The voice at the other end of the phone states, down to the last cent, the amount you lost months ago in an investment group, and says "your money has been collected and is waiting in the account". These calls, made in the name of Metamax, are a refund (recovery) scheme aimed at robbing the investment fraud victim a second time. The only thing expected is a payment that looks small, needed to "release" the refund.
📞 How Does the Call Unfold?
The targets are people who previously lost money through an exchange or investment group, and even people whose case is still at the investigation stage. The caller introduces himself as a Metamax employee and tells the following story:
- The lost money has been "collected" and converted into dollars so that it can be turned into crypto.
- Because the amount is high, a block has been placed on the account and the money is frozen.
- The victim's IBAN is needed so that the refund can be made.
- To convert the dollars into Turkish lira, the victim is asked to pay a "conversion fee" into another IBAN supplied by the caller and to send the receipt.
To win trust, the amount of the first loss is stated correctly. This indicates that the victim's data has passed from the first fraud chain to this team. In a genuine refund no advance payment is asked from the recipient; every fee requested to "unblock the frozen money" is a new loss.
🔍 The Lines Used and the Name Confusion
First contact is made from a number beginning with 0312 401 07, which looks like an Ankara landline. A mobile number beginning with 0530 527 22 is then given to move the conversation to WhatsApp. The last digits of the numbers may change; the team has called from different lines at different times.
The name "Metamax" is also used by registered companies operating in other fields in Türkiye. The scheme described in this article is a phone team that borrows the name of those companies to create trust; imitating a well-known name is a classic part of the organised call centre patternTR. Legally, because this scheme is carried out using an institution's name and means of communication, it falls under the aggravated forms of fraud listed in Article 158 of the Turkish Penal Code; the current list of authorised firms in Türkiye is on the SPK page of intermediary institutions.
🔗 Other Schemes That Call Victims Again
Teams that obtain lists of investment victims and return with "we found your money" are nothing new. We have examined schemes working on the same logic before.
- A money recovery network posing as a law officeTR
- PSP-Claimback: a scheme that asks for upfront costs for a refundTR
- FX Institution: an insurance and loss recovery pretextTR

🧭 How Does the Legal Process Work?
Recovery calls often arrive while the first case is still ongoing. The process roughly runs through the following steps:
- The investigation into the first investment fraud proceeds through the stages from investigation to indictmentTR.
- Later refund calls and the payments requested may be added to the case as a continuation of the same chain.
- At the prosecution stage, the rights the victim holds as an intervening partyTR come into play.
- On the criminal side, the aggravating circumstances of qualified fraudTR are assessed.
