Turkish Citizenship by the General Route

Turkish citizenship can also be acquired by general application by foreigners who have legally resided in Türkiye for a certain period. This article explains citizenship by the general route for information purposes.

📋 Basic Conditions

For citizenship by the general route, conditions such as lawful, uninterrupted residence in Türkiye for the period set by law, good moral character, not posing a danger to public health and having sufficient income are required. The ability to communicate in Turkish and integration into society may also be assessed. The conditions are required together as a whole.

Note: Citizenship by the general route is a status granted at the discretion of the authorities when the conditions are met.

🗓️ Residence Period

Periods spent under certain types of residence permit are taken into account in this calculation; however, not every permit type is counted in the same way. Statuses such as a long-term residence permit may help the process move forward more steadily. Calculating the periods correctly is important for the timing of the application.

⚖️ Assessment and Outcome

The application is reviewed by the relevant authorities and assessed in terms of national security and public order. Citizenship is less a matter of entitlement than a status granted at the authorities' discretion when the conditions are met. If the application is rejected, the administrative court route may be considered. Each case is handled under its own circumstances.
